Six
student leaders arrested
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
April 23, 2009
Six student
leaders at the National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) were arrested the
day before yesterday, 21 April 2009 for allegedly inciting protests
over the high tuition fees. The University demanded that students
must pay all outstanding fees before the beginning of examinations
held at the college last week on Monday the 6th of April 2009. The
six arrested are Kurayi Hoyi the Student Representative Committee
President, Sheunesu Nyoni, Vivid Gwede, Edius Muchenka, Emmanuel
Munyanyiwa and Kudakwashe Magucha. The six appeared in court today
and were released on bail. They were further remanded to the 6th
of May 2009.
ZINASU is enraged at
the prosecution of student leaders who are staging peaceful protests
to address issues that are affecting them. We demand that the police
desist from using violence as a means of breaking up peaceful protests.
We urge the Ministry of Higher Education to urgently look into the
fees charged by tertiary institutions as they remain out of reach
for many students.
