students released from custody

Ten National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) students have been
released from police custody on strict bail conditions today. The
ten, Keith Chigumo, Tawanda Saiti, Trevor Simbarashe, Lawrence Bhebhe,
Evans Musara, Daniel Hwacha, Kennedy Chizama, Michael Zvinowanda,
Brighton Mukuvari and Fortune Karimanzira were remanded to the 4th
of May 2009.They were released after paying US10 each and are to
report at Bulawayo Central Police Station every Wednesday as well
as to reside at their given addresses up to the finalization of
their case.
Their charge
was changed from malicious damage to property to public violence.
The ten have been languishing in police cells for the past five
days. Two of the students sustained serious injuries after being
assaulted by a University security guard a Mr. Banda. One student
sustained a suspected fracture while other is having blurred vision
after being hit on the nose bridge by a truncheon. The students
were arrested following a demonstration on campus after NUST authorities
put up notices to the effect that students who had not fully paid
up their tuition fees will not be able to sit for their examinations.
The students were represented by Christopher Dube-Banda from Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
