National University of Science and Technology elects new student leadership
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)

Jailed NUST Students Representative Council Presidential election candidate Cde Kurai 'Garnet' Hoyi won the students union elections in absentia today at polls held at the institution today. Hoyi a second year Industrial Engineering student polled 202 votes against 35 votes of Tendai Mudavanhu a second year Quantity Surveying student.Hoyi was arrested yesterday after students at the institution protested against high tuition fees on Monday the 6th of April 2009..

Elections for the rest of the Councilors were held separately and the following comrades made it into the council:-

Musiyamaye Welcome

Meanwhile the six detained student leaders including Kurai Hoyi are still in custody and being charged with malicious damage to property. The ZINASU Spokesperson Blessing Vava, visited the detained at Bulawayo Central Police station and condemned the continued illegal detention of the student leaders. ''We feel sorry for those who are continuing inflicting pain and committing these barbaric violations of human rights at this moment during the transitional period''said Vava.
