Six
NUST Students arrested
Student
Solidarity Trust
April 06, 2009
Six National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) students have been
arrested following a demonstration on campus over deregistration
of the majority of students who have failed to pay tuition fees.
Tuition fees at NUST and in most state universities are ranging
between US$580-US$600. The arrested students are ZINASU
Treasurer Sheunesu Nyoni ,Edius Muchekwa, Kuda Magachu, Emmanuel
Munyenyiwa, Kurayi Hoyi and Vivid Gwede
Reports from NUST allege
that about 600 students demonstrated today in the morning over what
amounts to deregistration of those students who have failed to pay
the fees. The majority of students have not managed to raise the
needed foreign currency as most of their parents are civil servants
earning a meager US$100 or less yet the fees are pegged at US$580-$600.
The inclusive government
announced that no student will be chased away for non payment of
fees but University Vice Chancellors and Principals are resisting
it thereby sending away students. A trail of resistance is still
being witnessed in various colleges and Universities and the Zimbabwe
National Students Union urges the minister of Higher Education and
Tertiary Education to reign in so that Vice Chancellors and college
Principals should tow government policies without failure.
The ZINASU Press Secretary
Blessing Vava urged the core-ministers of Home affairs to deal with
students in a more civilized manner respecting universal human rights.
The continued arrests and suspensions of students can impact negatively
in the operation of the inclusive government.
