A Harare magistrate summons University of Zimbabwe students
Student Solidarity Trust
March 30, 2009

A Harare magistrate has summoned seven University of Zimbabwe students to appear in the Harare magistrate court tomorrow. The seven, Shaun Matsheza, Ceaser Sitiya, Manifest Jabuli, Thabani Moyo, Tatenda Chiuya and Shingirayi Chikomba successfully applied for a refusal of remand order early last year on charges of public violence following a demonstration at the University campus. Students were demonstrating against top up fees. Early last year a Harare magistrate refused to place the seven on remand ordering the state to pursue the case by way of summons. These summonses are coming at a time the University of Zimbabwe has failed to open its doors to students due to viability problems. University authorities had announced that lessons will resume today but the university failed to open its doors. This is a litmus test to the inclusive government as many Zimbabweans are hoping that the education sector will be reformed so as to resuscitate it.
