Student
leaders arrested in Bindura
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
March 03, 2009
Students at Bindura
University of Science Education (BUSE) staged a peaceful demonstration
over the reviewed new tuition fees structure announced by the Minister
of Higher ad Tertiary Education Dr Stan Mudenge yesterday the third
of March 2009. Students got the shock of their lives when they arrived
at the institution in the morning to find closed gates with heavily
armed campus security personnel denying entry to students who had
not paid fees. Students then force marched themselves into the college
campus chanting revolutionary songs denouncing the new fees and
demanding a further reduction of the fees.
The Vice Chancellor Professor
Katsvanga refused to address the students and instead ordered the
arrest of three student leaders namely Respect Ndanga, Innocent
Kapoya and Kelvin Veremu and the trio is still in police custody
at Bindura Central Police Station. The Zimbabwe National Students
Union views the reduction as a 'non event' as the fees
are still exorbitant and we urge the government to quickly come
up with clear and sound funding policy frame works to address the
issue of fees and students' welfare and stop making empty
promises.
We also note the comments
made by the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Mudenge when he was
announcing the new fees, 'the fees are still reasonably high
. . . no students should be chased away for nonpayment of fees
..." ZINASU will convene a consultative forum for heads of
students and youth formations to develop an all inclusive response
to the issues affecting students and youths. A press conference
will be convened to publish the developments and resolutions of
this meeting.
