school students protest against foreign currency fees
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
March 03, 2009
Students at Kuwadzana
High 1 School yesterday protested against a top up fees of USD$50
which the school authorities was forcing them to pay. It all started
when the school authorities closed the school main gate and placed
notices instructing students who have not paid fees that they will
not be allowed entrance and will not attend lessons.
The protest
turned violent and it resulted in the school security wall being
brought down and windows destroyed by the irate students. Students
and parents vowed not to pay any fees in foreign currency. The protest
was part of the ongoing ZINASU National Campaign Against Dollarisation
of Education in Zimbabwe (NACADEZ).On the 17th of February ZINASU
and the Combined
Harare Residents Association (CHRA) combined forces and took
the campaign to primary and secondary schools.
The Zimbabwe National
Students Union leadership will be meeting with the school headmaster
Mr. Musemburi this afternoon to discuss the fees issue among other
things.
