UZ
fees reduction
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
March 03, 2009
The Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU) wishes to dismiss the revised tuition
fees by the University
of Zimbabwe (UZ) administration and urges students to ignore
the new fees. In a notice to students which was broadcasted on state
radio midday news (02/03/2009) the University advised students that
fees has been revised as follows:
| Department |
Proposed
tuition fees |
| Faculty of Arts
and Humanities |
from US$ 1000 to
200 |
| Faculty of Agriculture
and Engineering |
from USD$ 1400 to
200 |
| Faculty of Medicine
and Veterinary Science |
from USD$ 1800 to
600 |
| Foreign students'
fees |
remain unchanged
USD$2500 |
*these fees are being
charged per semester
We urge the University
to revise their fees further downwards as the fees are still out
of reach to majority of the students studying at the institution.
We reaffirm our position that we will not pay any fees in foreign
currency and still maintain that it is the responsibility of the
government to fund education. The union urges students to report
to college when it reopens its doors on 30 March 2009 even if they
do not have the money to pay fees. The Minister of Higher and Tertiary
Education Dr Stan Mudenge on the 23rd of February 2009 assured the
students that they will be allowed to attend lectures even if they
have not paid fees. The government should put clear policy frameworks
for funding students in tertiary institutions and reintroduce grants
and payouts to students to cater for fees and students welfare.
