NACADEZ
roars into life . . . as forex fees protests spread
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
February 04, 2009
The National
Campaign Against Dollarization of Education (NACADEZ) is now in
full swing as more than 1 000 students staged a peaceful demonstration
yesterday, 3 February 2009 at the University
of Zimbabwe (UZ). This was after college authorities announced
that students pay US$400 before the 11th of February 2009 so as
to write end of semester examinations.
Students were shocked
to receive notices informing them to pay the amount or risk not
writing examinations. This angered the students who immediately
staged a demonstration which was crushed by riot police resulting
in the arrests of 73 students while 29 were injured in the process.
Meanwhile
. . .
There was chaos and pandemonium
at Midlands State University when the NACADEZ team was denied permission
by security guards to address close to 100 students who converged
at the college hall. Students had gathered to be addressed by the
team which reiterated that students should not pay the $US1 200
fees announced as it remains the duty of the Government to fund
education. The team managed to address the students and distributed
NACADEZ t-shirts and fliers advising them to desist from paying
the unaffordable fees.
NUST
Another NACADEZ
team is addressing a general meeting at the National
University of Science and Technology today, 4 February 2009.
Mr Clever Bere, ZINASU President is leading the team which will
address and advise students to boycott the payment of fees in foreign
currency.
The ZINASU Secretary
General, Lovemore Chinoputsa said that institutions of higher learning
will remain ungovernable and reiterated that the campaign will not
stop until tertiary institutions revert to payment of fees in local
currency.
Under the same token,
the Zimbabwe National Students Union is holding a press conference
tomorrow, Thursday 5 February 2009 at the Quill Club, New Ambassador
Hotel commencing at 1100hrs.
