Struggle against dollarisation intensifies as NUST students protest against dollarisation of education
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
January 28, 2009

National University of Science and Technology (NUST),students today peacefully protested against the dollarization of education in the country. Thousands of students gathered in Delta lecture theatre (Freedom Hall) at a general meeting organised by the Student Representative Council to discuss the new fee structure pegged in foreign currency. Students resolved not to pay fees in foreign currency and demanded they pay affordable fees in local currency. After the general meeting the students peacefully marched around the campus holding placards and singing revolutionary songs denouncing the dollarization of education in Zimbabwe. The students were addressed by the ZINASU Treasurer, Sheunesu Nyoni and NUST Students Union Secretary for Information and Publicity Brian Mtisi. The protest at NUST is part of the Zimbabwe National Students Union national campaign against dollarization of education in Zimbabwe (NACADEZ) which was launched on the 20th of January. The Campaign has intensified and is getting to all the parts of the country. Last week students at the University of Zimbabwe staged a demonstration against dollarization of education. The University has since placed notices informing students that they will not pay fees in foreign currency, which is a victory for the students. We urge parents who have children learning in primary and secondary schools not to pay fees foreign currency.
