Fees
still to be gazetted
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
January 19, 2009
The Ministry
of Higher and Tertiary Education has dismissed the new fee structure
gazetted by some state universities namely the Midlands State University
(MSU) and the National
University of Science and Technology (NUST). In a story carried
out by the state owned weekly newspaper, The Sunday Mail of the
18th of January, the permanent secretary in the Ministry, Dr Washington
Mbizvo said that the ministry is yet to approve any university fees,
but instead they were waiting for recommendations from universities
on the new fees for the 2009 academic.' State Universities fees
have not yet been finalised because the universities have not yet
submitted their recommendations,'' Mbizvo told the paper. Some state
universities have already posted notices on their websites with
a proposed fee increase in foreign currency.
The Zimbabwe National
Students Union (ZINASU) last week launched a campaign against the
dollarization of education in Zimbabwe (NACADEZ) and the campaign
is in full swing and will only stop when our demands to pay affordable
fees in local currency are met. The campaign also saw the union
writing a petition to the Ministry of Higher Education regarding
the proposed fees by state institutions. The announcement by Mbizvo
is a clear indication that there are giving in to pressure from
the students and we wish to assure the students that victory is
certain. We hope that the Ministry of Higher Education is going
to handle the fees issue with a sober mindset and come up with affordable
fees which we feel should be pegged in local currency.
