Statement on the new fees structure
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
January 13, 2009

Noting with grave concern the newly proposed fees structure by tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe to charge students in foreign currency (USD) as a move that will lead to massive dropout as our parents are either unemployed or for the few employed earning in Zimbabwean dollars.

Express our deepest anger and disappointment at the government of Zimbabwe for reneging on its responsibility to fund students and education and do hereby declare our resistance to payment in foreign currency.

Having consulted the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary education on the fees issue and having been assured that the fees have not been approved, now

Urge all students to immediately return to school and pay in Zimbabwean dollars.

Further, urge all tertiary institutions to desist from illegal foreign currency fees as they are still a subject of discussion by the government.

Mindful of the foregoing ZINASU today launches the "National Campaign against the Dollarisation of education in Zimbabwe" (NACADEZ)

ZINASU will not allow the government of Zimbabwe and its tired cronies to destroy the future of students and hereby calls upon the principals in the Global [political agreement to urgently chart a solution for Zimbabwe.
