ZINASU
General Councilor arrested, barred from writing examinations
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
December 01, 2008
ZINASU General
Councillor and School of Mines Students Union President Archieford
Mudzengi was on Friday 28 November 2008 dragged from his exam room
by 4 CID Law and Order officers and detained at Bulawayo Central
Police Station. The arrest comes after the student leader failed
to appear in court on Thursday 24 November as he was writing his
end of year examinations. Mudzengi was arrested on the 11th of November
during an NCA/ZINASU
demonstration.
We demand his
immediate release as he is supposed to be sitting for his exams
today and the rest of the week. In 2005 the former ZINASU President
Promise Mkwananzi was arrested in the exam room at the University
of Zimbabwe. We condemn the continued violations of our academic
freedoms by the Mugabe regime and the arrest clearly shows that
we are dealing with an insensitive regime. Arrests and harassment
of student leaders has been on the increase for the past 10 years
and this year alone ZINASU has recorded over 350 unlawful arrests
of students. This number is greater than the number of students
arrested and detained by all apartheid regimes in Rhodesia.
ZINASU is engaged with Parliament and grassroots mobilisation in
order to campaign for a new people driven constitution that will
guarantee education as a basic right and prevent arbitrary arrests
by state security forces.
