ZINASU
leads protest - pushes for resolution of inter-party deal
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
Oct 27, 2008
Students and
youths today staged yet another demonstration in Harare which was
strategically held the same day as the SADC talks on Zimbabwe. The
protesters demanded an immediate resolution to the current political
impasse facing the country. ZINASU President Clever Bere addressed
the crowd before they marched to Harare International Conference
Centre (HICC). Mr. Bere urged youths not to be spectators in Zimbabwe's
current political crisis but to arise and compel the urgent resolution
of the power sharing agreement that has since turned into a long
standing disagreement.
The youths were however blocked by heavily armed policemen before
they got to (HICC). About 120 policemen with dogs and armed with
canisters, button sticks and rifles descended on the youths. The
police fired teargas and ruthlessly beat the protesters including
other ordinary people most of who were queued in banks. More than
50 people were arrested, most of them members of the Women's
Coalition. One unidentified youth was abducted by Zanu pf youths
and taken away in a ZANU PF truck.
ZINASU condemns, in the strongest terms, such exhibition of police
brutality especially at such a time when the nation is supposed
to be focusing on nation healing and restoration of human rights.
It is sad to note that within two hours before the march by students
and youths, ZANU PF youths had also marched in town towards ZANU
PF headquarters without any interference from the police. It is
because of such sanctioned cruelty by the police that the students
want the Ministry of Home Affairs to go to the MDC T, as ZANU PF
has clearly turned the police into ZANU PF militia, with no respect
of human rights whatsoever.
The demonstration was organised by various youth organisations and
amongst those who participated were students and youths from Youth
Initiative for Democracy in Zimbabwe (YIDEZ), Students
Solidarity Trust (SST), Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU),
Youth
Agenda, Youth Forum, Students
Christian Movement in Zimbabwe (SCMZ) and Women's Coalition
