ZINASU
demonstrates at Parliament
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
Oct 14, 2008
More than 500
hundred students from across the country staged a massive demonstration
at the Parliament of Zimbabwe today, the 14th of October 2008. The
disgruntled students demanded an immediate redress to the current
crisis in the education sector. They marched from Zimrights
House towards the Parliament and handed over a petition to the August
House which resumed sitting today. The angry students braved the
armed riot police who disrupted the protesting students more than
four times.
The students were met
at the Parliament by more than 150 armed policemen who denied them
access to the August House but the President of ZINASU Clever Bere
and the Legal and Social Welfare Secretary, Courage Ngwarai defied
the police and handed over the petition leading to their arrest
outside the Parliament. Another truck load of policemen with dogs
arrived soon after and unleashed a reign of terror on the unarmed
students leading to the arrest of five more, injuring ten others
in the process. Among those who were seriously injured is the Gender
and Human Rights Secretary, Priviledge Mutanga who sustained head
injuries and a swollen arm. Obert Masaraura a Zinasu General Councilor
from Midlands State University sustained serious head injuries and
has been admitted at the Avenues Clinic.
ZINASU condemns such
acts of barbarism by the policemen. It is sad to note that human
rights violations by the state apparatus continue amid the current
talks between the major political parties in the country. The presence
of the Chief negotiator former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki,
did not deter the shameless policemen from brutalizing the innocent
students. The students vowed to continue demonstrating until sanity
prevails in the education sector.
