World
Teachers Day: October 05
Student
Solidarity Trust
October 01, 2008
The Student
Solidarity Trust joins hands with the Progressive
Teacher's Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and other strategic
labour organizations in celebrating World Teacher's Day with
the rest of the world community, in recognition of their invaluable
contribution towards the enlightenment of mankind.
It is rather unfortunate
that this noble and momentous occasion comes at a time when our
education system is at an advanced degree of collapse, which deterioration
can be attributed to a couple of factors chief among which has been
just sheer neglect and lack of competent management on the part
of the government.
As we speak, the situation
has simply become pathetic, as teachers are no longer attending
to their core business and have been on strike since schools opened
doors this term. The reason behind this job action has been the
lack of adequate remuneration which has basically reduced these
once high caliber persons to practical beggars.
The situation has been
particularly unbearable in institutions of higher learning that
have virtually been unable to open doors to students because of
viability problems and lecturers, who ideally can be regarded as
part of the teaching fraternity have simply not set foot back at
their respective campuses in protest of low wages and poor working
conditions.
This has created a hazardous
situation on the ground which is threatening to blow out of containment
if urgent action is not taken by the government to redress this
plight. It is a sad scenario when teachers have to commemorate such
an important day on their calendar and indeed for the broader populace
when jubilation should be in the air.
