Bindura University students arrested
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 17, 2008

Zimbabwe National Students Zimbabwe National Students' Union Secretary for International Relations, Chiedza Gadzirai along with nine other students from Bindura University of Science Education(BUSE) have been apprehended by security agents. They were arrested today, 17 September 2008, during a peaceful protest against top up fees and water shortages at the campus.

Police descended on the unassuming students who had engaged in a peaceful march against fees hikes at the institution. Students at the institution were shocked when the authorities demanded to top up fees of $30 000 from the $8 000 that had been tabled at the beginning of the semester. Bindura University is the only state university currently open.

ZINASU condemns the continued suppression of freedom of expression and association in the country. It is sad to detect this especially after the recent agreement by the two MDC formations and ZANU PF to end the economic, social and political impasse haunting the country. The ten are being held at Bindura Police Station.
