Continued postponement of the opening of universities worrying
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 01, 2008

The Zimbabwe National Students Union, (ZINASU), notes with deep concern the continued decay and deterioration of our country's Education sector. The postponement of the opening of the country's Universities adds on to the woes in the education sector. The postponement is a direct affront to the right to education as students are being unjustifiable denied an opportunity to learn and finish academic programs within specified time. The postponement also shows that the ruling elite is failing to enhance the education sector and bring positive changes that can improve the quality of graduates coming from state institutions.

The Mugabe administration has indeed run out of ideas and this is just but one of the many symptoms of a failed state. It is however shocking to realize that this illegitimate government led by the octogenarian dictator intends to undemocratically cling on to power at the expense of the suffering people of Zimbabwe.

The mass exodus of teaching personnel from all institutions of learning including primary and high schools, polytechnics and universities creates a dark picture engulfing our future and that of our country. We also note with concern the bad state of accommodation and sanitary facilities in almost all institutions of higher learning in the country thereby posing a serious health hazard to the students. We call upon the authorities to address these anomalies before opening these institutions.

The students union therefore calls upon those in authority today to respect the aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe. Selfishness and greediness will not lead us towards achieving our Zimbabwean dream where education, health, jobs and other basic needs are made available to all Zimbabweans. Where are the promises that led and inspired the gallant sons and daughters to sacrifice everything to liberate our beloved country? Where is education for all by year 2000 as promised in 1980? Where is that promise of health for all by year 2000?

Inept

We would like to remind Mugabe and his surrogates that you cannot be a leader unless and until the interest of the people become the focus of your leadership. Our country is crying for responsible leadership which Mugabe and his cronies have been and are still failing to provide.

We will not sit idly and cowardly as the nation perishes. We therefore urgently demand the opening of all universities.

"Education is the most powerful weapon for development." Nelson R Mandela.

Change is inevitable; little by little freedom shall come.
