August 04, 2008

Four Great Zimbabwe State University students will once again appear for trial tomorrow at Masvingo Magistrates Court. Brenda Mupfurutsa, Oglive Makova, George Makamure and Joel Bingudza are facing contempt of court charges following a demonstration they staged at Masvingo magistrate court when Edison Hlatswayo was appearing before the magistrate on 15 October 2007. The demonstration also got them suspended from school before they were reinstated in time for them to be able to write their end of year exams.

After having spent four days in police holding cells, the students were remanded in custody on the 20 October 2007 when they appeared in court. They were later remanded out of custody on the 25th of October 2007 and from there on subjected to a series of routine court appearances, at least one appearance every month until their trial date was set for 6 August 2008.

Mupfurutsa, Makamure and Bingudza have now finished their studies; however Makumure's results are still being withheld while Makova is still on suspension.

Meanwhile seven Bulawayo Polytechnic Students who were suspended form the college in June this year for mobilizing students to be polling agents are in the process of filing their High Court application challenging their victimization. The seven are Simba Kuzipa (President),Gregory Door (Vice President), Desire Siyaneta (Secretary General), Malvern Kadete Political and legal affairs secretary), Leopold Tapi (Sports secretary), Tonderai Chiborise (Food and Accommodation secretary) and Donald Mazikana.

Meanwhile, The Zimbabwe National Student Union (ZINASU) Secretary General Lovemore Chinoputsa and Shadreck Vengesai appeared before the University disciplinary committee on Thursday last week. Their case arose from the disturbances that rocked the university on 07 July 2008.The two were suspended pending disciplinary hearing. To date they have appeared a record nine times .The same disciplinary hearing had suspended Ceaser Sitiya and Shawn Matheza.Three students Thabani Moyo,Shingirai Chikomba and Manifest Jabuli. Fortune Chamba who is the Students Union secretary for legal affairs had his matter referred to the vice chancellor for determination.

Commenting on this Chinoputsa attacked the university authorities for taking more than a year dealing with the issue while students are not attending school.

Security officers who were witnesses in the case exonerated Chinoputsa from the charges.
