  • AASU press statement on Zimbabwe
    All Africa Students Union (AASU)
    July 22, 2008

The All Africa Students Union (AASU) wishes to express its joy over the recent development in Zimbabwe characterized by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the conflicting parties in the country. There is no doubt that what is happening in Zimbabwe today is the triumph of reasoning over personal pride and greed, that witness the senseless murder of innocent lives particularly that of women and children. It is also a demonstration that we as Africans can find solutions to our problems.

The leadership of the ZANU PF and the MDC should realize that what they decide to do now will affect the destiny of the people in Zimbabwe; therefore, they should not allow their good and genuine intentions to be eclipsed by greed, selfishness or the suspicion that one party's actions are being influenced by external forces.

They should see themselves as Zimbabweans, regardless the colour of one's skin. After all, the continuous instability and the unacceptable violence and economic conditions do not benefit any one in that once, prosperous nation called Zimbabwe.

We wish to also call on comrade Mugabe as a matter of genuine peace and unity to with immediate effect suspend operations and dismantle the armed groups within the ZANU PF youth wing. The West and China must this time around refrain from getting involved in the domestic affairs of Zimbabwe by applying pressure covertly on the parties to act in certain ways. If they do so, they must know they are not acting on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe.

The last thing we as a Union and we believe many progressive organizations want in Zimbabwe is the judiciary, the police and other security agencies that can not stand the dictatorship of one single individual.

    Long live Zimbabwe

    Long live Africa
