ZINASU makes resolutions at general council meeting
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 17, 2008

On the 17th of May 2008 Zimbabwe National Students Union held its first General Council meeting after Congress at YWCA - Westwood in Harare. Student Representative Council Presidents from 40 tertiary institutions country wide constituted the General Council. Chief amongst many other student-related issues was the call for concerted efforts by ALL to ascertain ultimate consolidation of democracy in Zimbabwe.

The general council made the following resolutions:-

  1. Reaffirm our support for the Movement for Democratic Change Presidential candidate in the 27 June 2008 second election, Mr. Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.
  2. Invite all pro democracy institutions to combine efforts in build up campaigns to the second election (run-off).
  3. To condemn all acts of politically motivated violence perpetrated by Zanu PF and to encourage communities to resist further attacks. (more than 30 lives have so far been lost at the hands of Zanu PF)
  4. Lobby for the adoption of key conditions for the forthcoming second election; these are, open observers invitation to allow for International and Regional observers, call for the deployment of AU peacekeeping force to curb politically motivated violence, Results be released within 48hours, and SADC to verify results of first election.
  5. After careful and thorough analysis of the xenophobia attacks on non-nationals in South Africa and the reasons behind the attacks in question, the General Council resolved that Mr. Mugabe squarely shares the blame. The argument being that the situation at home has forced Zimbabweans to flee the country and subject themselves to the harsh, inhumane and degrading conditions in foreign land, South Africa included.
