  • No to political violence
    Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
    May 16, 2008

The Zimbabwe National Students Union notes with great concern the escalation of political violence in the country. The orgy of violence that has resulted in hundreds of families being displaced as their homes were destroyed as a result of political violence. To date several activists and supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change have been killed and some are in hospitals nursing wounds after the brutal and savage attacks being perpetrated by ZANU PF militias and war veterans.

We are deeply disturbed by the acts of violence on innocent citizens and warn the culprits that justice will be mated upon them soon. As a students union we are not going to sit idle and watch as our fathers are being maimed and butchered by ZANU PF thugs. Violence has no place in a democratic society and ZANU PF should just swallow its pride and accept defeat.

Teachers have also fled their schools as there are being targeted and being accused of rigging the polls for MDC. We stand by the teachers and urge them not to continue with their daily duties until there's a conducive teaching environment.

We will not take lightly utterances by the former Deputy Minister of Information Bright Matonga that ZANU PF only used 25% of their capacity and the remaining 75% will be used in the runoff that is, if its going to be conducted. In essence the capacity he was referring to was violence that they have already started. We urge the people to be united against this violence, fear and intimidation breeds misery in the land and they will not win you elections.

We do not condone violence and appeal to the perpetrators to STOP as this will result in more deaths, we want peace to prevail in our land.

Blessing Vava (Secretary for information and publicity)
