  • ZINASU demands release of ZCTU leaders
    Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
    May 14, 2008

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) notes with deep concern the continued and unwarranted detention and denial of bail of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) leadership of President Lovemore Matombo and Secretary General Wellington Chibebe.

We condemn in the strongest of terms, this barbaric and idiotic behavior by Mugabe and his surrogates. The students' movement concludes that this systematic victimization of the pro-democracy activists, the students and labour leaders included is a deliberate move to silence the people of Zimbabwe and subvert the will of the people.

Further, the Union demands ZANU PF thugs to release the labour leaders forthwith. We also want to warn those responsible for the harassment of thousands of Zimbabweans that we will hold them accountable both at institutional level and in their personal capacity.

In addition, we call upon the Regional Leaders to intervene in the Zimbabwean crisis with the urgency the crisis requires. Specifically we call upon the African Union to deploy a peacekeeping mission to stop the prevailing political retribution by Mugabe and his thugs.

ZINASU stands in solidarity with the victims of ZANU PF's reign of terror which resulted in the ever rising deaths, hundreds severely tortured and tens of thousands displaced.

We urge the people of Zimbabwe to remain steadfast and resolute. Victory is in the horizon. The runoff must be the knock out round.

    He is finished.
