Student leader abducted
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 08, 2008

The whereabouts of the ZINASU Information and Publicity Secretary, Blessing Vava have been confirmed as he is said to have been abducted by war veterans in connivance with Chinhoyi University campus security officers early this morning. A follow up raid on the campus halls of residence by war veterans after students unrest last night, left many students homeless seeking sanctuary in bushes. A Lawyer deployed by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights advised ZINASU that Blessing was not taken to any police station and therefore his whereabouts are still unclear.

In another incident, Chinhoyi University students' Union leader Lothando Sibanda has been, this afternoon, arrested on campus by armed riot police who forcibly dragged her from the halls of residence tearing her clothes off in the process. Lothando had to painfully bear the embarrassment in the presence of male police officers who remained persistent. The crackdown on the students follows the disturbances on campus last night.

ZINASU unequivocally condemns in the strongest terms the continued arrests, abductions, tortures and other forms of victimization on student, civic and political leadership. ZINASU calls on the International Community to exercise its 'responsibility to protect' victims of state sanctioned killings, torture, and other forms of brutality.
