Students
protest on Chinhoyi University campus
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 07, 2008
Yesterday, the 7th of
May 2008 at around 1800hrs, more than 600 students staged a peaceful
protest at the Chinhoyi University of Technology campus demanding
the step down of the shameless Robert Mugabe who has brought misery
to the citizenry of Zimbabwe. Addressed at the Dining Hall by ZINASU
Information and Publicity secretary Blessing Vava, ZINASU Treasurer
Themba Maphenduka and Chinhoyi University Students' Union leader
Faith Mutepa, students attributed the total collapse of tertiary
education to the national governance crisis.
Failed attempts by campus
security officers to disrupt the peaceful protest impelled a vicious
storm on campus by two truckloads of black boot riot police. A black
out followed by indiscriminate assaults led to the arrest of Faith
Mutepa, Priviledge Matizanadzo and three other student council leaders.
The arrested were taken to Chinhoyi Central Police Station and are
still in police custody. No charges have been levelled against them
other than unfounded allegations that Faith Mutepa and the four
student council leaders assaulted some officers.
ZINASU President Clever
Bere warns Mugabe that this time the people of Zimbabwe will not
accept any games in the event of a Run-off. International supervision
should be mandatory hence, the demand for strong international observer
teams to oversee the electoral process and for the results to be
released within 48hours from voting day. There must be an end to
politically motivated violence during and after the electoral process.
