ZINASU on world press freedom day
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 03, 2008

The Zimbabwe National Students Union joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May 2008.

The commemoration comes at a time when Zimbabwe is topping the list of press freedom violations in the world. It is disturbing to note that several journalists including Mark Chavhunduka, Gift Phiri, Basildon Peta, Brian Hungwe, Andrew Meldrum, Luke Tamborinyoka, Geoff Nyarota, Wilf Mbanga, Urginia Mauluka, Tsvangirai Mukwazhi, Ray Choto and of late Frank Chikowore have been incarcerated by the bullish and unpopular regime of Robert Mugabe, the list is endless.

ZANU PF's denial and barring of foreign media practitioners from accreditation to cover the harmonized elections on 29 March from the so- called hostile western nations' exposed the dictatorship's quest in suffocating freedoms of the press. The Mugabe regime created an imposing and inescapable barrier to the development of a culture of openness, freely available and accessible information stimulating non-partisan debate.

Harsh media laws, which include Broadcasting Services Act, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Interception of Communications Act are being used to suppress the freedom of the press.

We are deeply concerned by the closure of various media houses, which were considered hostile to the outgoing government of Mugabe. To date, media houses namely The Daily News, The Daily News on Sunday, The Tribune, Capitol Radio, Joy TV and Munhumutapa African Broadcasting Corporation have all been closed and their licenses revoked by the infamous and biased Media and Information Commission.

We salute all those who have been able to raise their voices against all odds and provided the people of Zimbabwe with accurate and unbiased information. We lastly urge all journalists to remain vigilant and continue providing their services without any fear.
