University of Zimbabwe reopens
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
April 08, 2008

. . . students slapped with a ZW$13billion fee

The largest and oldest institution of higher learning, University of Zimbabwe (UZ) reopened yesterday, the 7th of April 2008 with shocking revelations on the exorbitant tuition and campus residence fees pegged at ZW$3,000,000,000-00 (USD 100,000) and ZW$10,000,000,000-00 (USD 333,333) respectively at an official 1 USD: ZW$30,000 exchange rate which is beyond the reach of many students. The university, which closed last year on the 21st of December 2007, opened late due to the controversial harmonized elections held on the 29th of March 2008.

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Secretary General, Lovemore Chinoputsa who is also the outgoing President of UZ Student Executive Council, toured the university campus and witnessed low student turn out for the new semester. The universities student enrolment of at least 13,000 students had less than 100 students queuing for payment of tuition and accommodation fees.

On the 9th of July 2007, campus resident students were without notice forced out of their halls of residence for resisting the payment of an unjustifiable top up on accommodation fees and unfounded allegations by the University authorities that the halls were unfit for human habitation. Interviews by ZINASU revealed that the majority of the student populace was failing to register and secure accommodation due to exorbitant fees clearly reflecting lack of concern and preferential treatment by government towards the plight of the students.

ZINASU condemns the diabolic fees which are beyond the reach of many and are meant to marginalize and malign the general student populace. Education is a fundamental human right for all and not for the elite. ZINASU will engage all critical stakeholders in preserving students' interests.
