ZW$1,2million take-home stipend for student teachers
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
February 19, 2008

. . . who can ever take this government seriously

Zimbabwe National Students Union learns with great concern about the take-home stipend of ZW$1,2million per month that is received by Student Teachers in Zimbabwe. This is not only an insult to the teaching profession but also a serious negation to Zimbabwe's education by the government.

One loaf of bread cost ZW$3million
The meagre allowance is expected to cover transport, accommodation, and food costs, teaching and learning aids, stationery and other necessities. Most devastating is that most of these students are sent to remote areas where there are poor communication facilities, roads, and health facilities with no medical aid covers whatsoever. The students are being exposed to difficult conditions as many of them are being forcibly posted as far as Uzumba Marambapfungwe for ruling party Zanu PF political gains. Many professional teachers have since left the country due to poor remuneration, hence the vast shortage of qualified teaching staff. As a result, student teachers are being forced to take full loads of classes like that of qualified teachers which is between 30 to 35 periods a week when the recommended is 15 periods per week for student teachers.

As the students union, we vehemently condemn the ill treatment and impoverishment of student teachers as this expose them to inhumane and immoral activities such as prostitution and theft which can lead to the continual spread of the deadly HIV and AIDS.
