ZINASU
letter to Mugabe ahead of the 2008 General Elections
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
February 01, 2008
The Chancellor (All
State Universities)
State President of Zimbabwe
Robert. G. Mugabe
Dear R. G Mugabe
RE:
ZINASU Bi- Annual Congress Declaration (2008- 2010)
Zimbabwe National
Students' Union (ZINASU) held its Bi-Annual Congress in Harare,
on the 19th of January 2008. Forty-four Institutions of Higher Learning
were represented at the Congress totalling 168 delegates, where
a new leadership was elected and mandated to the Congress Declaration.
ZINASU brings to your
attention, with great concern, the continued and unabated fall in
the standards of education in the country. This, mainly due to the
shortage of learning and teaching facilities, massive exodus of
qualified teaching personnel, is a culmination of your government's
ill prioritisation of state resources and failing to accord education
the priority it deserves.
ZINASU is disappointed
by your conduct, lack of seriousness and urgency in the purported
on-going SADC
mediation process meant to resolve the current multi-faceted
crisis our country finds itself in. Your attitude towards the initiative
facilitated by the President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, leaves
a lot to be desired, especially considering the fact that you proceeded
to announce the election dates before the conclusion of the mediation
process.
We further put to you
that the students of Zimbabwe will not accept an election outcome
from a flawed election process. We strongly and unequivocally warn
you and your cronies that the country will be ungovernable if you
steal the people's vote.
We also want to refer
you to the pre-independence demands by General Josiah Magama Tongogara,
of free and fair elections where international observers oversee.
Regards
Clever Bere
ZINASU President
