Arrested
students assaulted in police custody
Students Solidarity Trust
January 10, 2008
Two Midlands
State University (MSU) students arrested on Tuesday afternoon
were severely assaulted in police custody. When the Students Solidarity
Trust (SST) rapid response team visited them yesterday they witnessed
that the two had walking problems. Obert Masaraure had blood stains
on his clothes. They were all in pain and had spent the night without
food. Masaraure was also refused to take his medicine. A medical
doctor, Dr Purazi, brought by their lawyer was refused permission
to see them by Gweru Police.
Obert Masaraure and Onwell
Marasha were arrested in the streets of Gweru while demonstrating
against water problems, regular electricity cuts and worsening educational
provision. The two combed the Gweru streets wielding a big banner,
sloganeering and singing revolutionary songs leaving Gweru urbanites
stunned by their determination and zeal. They also demanded free
and fair elections. It was a two men demonstration. The two briefly
appeared in court this morning but failed to appear in court due
to the fact that clerks of courts are on strike. They are expected
back in court this afternoon.
