UZ
students meet Parliamentary Portfolio on Education
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
November 23, 2007
On Thursday
23 November 2007, a University
of Zimbabwe delegation met the Parliamentary Portfolio on Education
at Parliament in Harare over the continued closure of campus halls
of residence and its negative impact on students. The university
delegation of five headed by Students Executive Council President
Lovemore Chinoputsa presented a comprehensive paper to the Portfolio
committee chaired by Hon. MP Fidelis Mhashu. Key issues discussed
were but not limited to the renovations of campus halls of residence
and the reinstatement of students back into these halls. Other areas
that the students brought to the attention of the committee included
increasing costs of learning and living, deterioration of the education
delivery system, mass exodus of teaching staff and prevalent student
victimization.
The delegation received
positive feedback from the committee that showed their commitment
in addressing the long overdue plight of students. The Parliamentary
Portfolio assured that they will have similar engagements with the
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Levi Nyagura and the Minister of
Higher and Tertiary Education Dr. Stan Mudenge. The committee has
scheduled a tour on the campus halls of residence and then give
recommendations to the relevant authorities.
Students at the University
of Zimbabwe welcomed these positive engagement with the Parliamentary
Portfolio on Education and hope that other key stakeholders such
as University authorities and Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education
would give equal preferential treatment to students plights.
