are suspended

Authorities at Great
Zimbabwe University have declared war on students as nine students
were suspended yesterday. The suspended students are Edmore Makonese,
Leonard Gwata, Desmond Ncube, Oglive Makova, Thomas Chanakira, Courage
Ngwarai, George Makamure, Faith Nkomo and Brenda Mupfurutsa.
They were suspended
pending disciplinary hearings to be conducted on unspecified dates.
It is believed that the suspensions emanated from the disturbances
that rocked the university in September when members of the Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU) clashed with pro-ZANU PF Zimbabwe
Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) members.
Victimisation of students
at the university has continued unabated in the last two months. This
has affected a lot of students who are suppose to be sitting for
their end of year examinations.Part of the suspention letter handed
to the students and signed by the university vice chancellor Prof
O.E.Maravanyika reads "You shall remain totally excluded from
the Great Zimbabwe University campus,lectures,library,residences
and all university activities during the period of your suspension
and untill your reaplication has been considered"
Meanwhile the
National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) has suspended two
student leaders.Themba Maphenduka was suspended for a record three
years and Mehluli Dube was suspended for one year. They were suspended
following hearings that ware conducted in May this year. They were
accused of inciting students against fees hikes last year in November.
