Polytechnic student leader arrested
Students Solidarity Trust
October 31, 2007
Victimisation of students
continues unabated in Zimbabwe's oldest city of Masvingo.
Eston Farayi, the President of Masvingo Polytechnic Students executive
council (SEC) was picked last night by police from the law and order
section, he was picked from Masvingo Polytechnic, and has been on
the police wanted list.
This follows students'
protests that engulfed Masvingo throughout this month. Students
in Masvingo had been demonstrating against the continued detention
of Edison Hlatshwayo, a fellow student leader from Great Zimbabwe
University. And Eston has been detained in connection with a demonstration
at Masvingo Polytechnic early this month, when students launched
the "Free Edison Campaign". Edison Hltsthawayo was released
on the 24th of October.
The arrest of Eston brings
the total number of students' arrests in Masvingo to thirty
for the month of October. He is currently detained at Rujeko police
station. End of year examinations are underway at the college and
Eston is supposed to be sitting for an end-of year examination tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Great
Zimbabwe University has intensified the victimisation of student
activists, Oglive Makova, a student activist from the University,
has been suspended for one year by the University authorities. The
suspension is informed by the disturbances at the campus which saw
students from the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZICOSU) disrupt a Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU) meeting outside the campus
premises. More student activists are in danger of being suspended.
