Jailed Great Zimbabwe
University students' executive council (SEC) Secretary General
was released late yesterday. This follows a meeting between his
lawyer and the regional prosecutor for Masvingo. Edison has been
released on five million dollars bail.
He also surrendered his
passport with the Masvingo magistrate court. He was also ordered
to report twice a week at Masvingo central police station. Hlatshwayo
was arrested on 27 September while attending a Youth Forum meeting
at Charles Austin theatre hall. Since then he has been remanded
in custody.
Meanwhile four other
students who were also remanded in custody have been granted bail
by courts in Masvingo. Oglvy Makova, George Makamure, Brenda Mupfurutsa
and Joel Bingudza have been granted $5 million bail, and have been
told to report once every week to the CID Law and Order Section,
Masvingo.
The trial date
has been set for 7th of November 2007. The four had been arrested
in connection with a demonstration in Masvingo that sought to denounce
the continued incarceration of the then detained student leader,
Edison Hlatshwayo, dubbed the Free Edison campaign by the Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU).
