Joel Dungudza
a part 3 Bachelor of Social science student at Great Zimbabwe University
in Masvingo has appeared in court today facing contempt of court
charges. This follows demonstrations that rocked Masvingo on Monday.
The Zimbabwe National
Students Union (ZINASU) launched "Free Edison campaign"
in order to highlight the persecution and systematic victimisation
that students are subjected to in Zimbabwe.
This brings the number
of students remanded in custody to five. Edison Hlatshwayo who was
arrested on 27 September is still in remand custody. George Makamure,
Brenda Mupfurutsa and Ogylive Makova were also remanded in custody
on Monday. They are to appear in court tomorrow for bail hearing.
The three are also being charged with contempt of court following
Monday's demonstration.
Meanwhile authorities
at Great Zimbabwe University and the University of Zimbabwe have
summoned students to disciplinary hearings. Ten students are to
appear at great Zimbabwe university disciplinary committee today.
The disciplinary is informed
by disturbances that rocked the campus last month when students
from the They are being accused of assaulting Zimbabwe Congress
of Students Union (ZICOSU) disrupted a meeting that was being addressed
by ZINASU members at campus.
