Justice delayed is justice denied!
Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
October 22, 2007

MASVINGO - Edison Hlatswayo, the Great Zimbabwe University student leader has been further remanded in custody until the 30th of October 2007 when he will appear again before the Masvingo magistrate's court.

Hlatswayo was arrested on 27 September 2007. Since then he has been detained in custody. The state denied him bail on eight occasions under flimsy grounds that the student leader would interfere with investigations.

The prosecutor, identified as Chauromwe vowed before the court session started that he would resign from office if Hlatswayo was to be granted bail. At one point, the magistrate granted him bail during the session, but Chauromwe, appealed against the magistrate's verdict.

Edison's health has deteriorated dismally. The police are still denying him access to medication. He is being denied access to food from relatives and progressive forces.

The other three students who were arrested on 18 October 2007 whilst demonstrating against the continued detention of Edison were also remanded in custody until the 25th of October 2007. The three are George Makamure, Orgylife Makova and Brenda Mupfurutsa, a female student. The police are denying Mupfurutsa access to sanitary wear.
