Students' unrest in Masvingo
Students Solidarity Trust
October 18, 2007

More than 17 Students have been arrested in the past three days in Masvingo. This follows the launch of the "Free Edison Campaign" by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU). Edison Hlatshwayo was arrested on 27 September and he has been remanded at Mutimurefu Prison since then. He has appeared in court more than six times. When he appeared in court yesterday afternoon, the presiding magistrate Mr. Maphiye referred the case to Monday when he will make a ruling on his bail application. The magistrate is also claiming that he has been threatened by "unknown students" if ever Hlatshwayo remains in custody.

Last night police from the CID Law and order section picked Oglive Makova at Great Zimbabwe University. It is believed that he was arrested in connection with the "Free Edison Campaign"

Meanwhile six students who were arrested on Monday night were finally found at Rujeko Police station in Rujeko high density suburb of Masvingo. The six are Munyaradzi Chitsike, Munyaradzi Chari, Tawanda Gonde, Stewart Munyanyi and Augustine Matetera. It is alleged that they broke windows at cumpus. They were later released without any charges.

Three students who were picked yesterday morning at Great Zimbabwe University are still in custody at Masvingo central police station. The three are George Makamure; Gift Kuzuwazuwa and Desmond Ncube.Their lawyer Mr Dumisani Hwacha was denied access to see them. They were arrested in connection with demonstrations that have rocked Masvingo in the past three days.

In a sudden development, Great Zimbabwe University has summoned ten students to the college disciplinary committee for hearing on the 23rd of this month. They are being accused of assaulting Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) members at campus. This follows disturbances during Orientation week when ZINASU and ZICOSU members clashed on campus.
