Free Edison campaign: 10 students arrested
Students Solidarity Trust
October 16, 2007

Masvingo

As the state continues to postpone bail hearing of jailed Great Zimbabwe University Students Executive Council (S.E.C) Secretary General Edison Hlatshwayo, 10 students were arrested last night at Masvingo Polytechnic and Great Zimbabwe University.

This follows general meetings at both institutions addressed by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Vice-President Gideon Chitanga and Secretary General Beloved Chiweshe.

Police fired teargas smoke at Masvingo polytechnic before arresting Munyaradzi Chitsike, Cleopas Zhoya and other students yet to be identified. More students were injured when the police invaded the venue of the general meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to mobilize students to take part in the recently launched "Free Edison Campaign". Edson Hlatshwayo was arrested on 27 September while attending a Youth Forum public meeting at Charles Austin theatre hall in Masvingo. Hitherto, the state has postponed his bail hearing for more than four times. His health is deteriorating. He is being charged with malicious injury to property following disturbances that rocked Great Zimbabwe University early September. He is to appear again in court this afternoon.
