Court defers hearing of Masvingo student leader
Students Solidarity Trust

A Masvingo magistrate has deferred a bail hearing application for jailed Great Zimbabwe University Students Representative council (SRC) secretary general .The courtroom was full today following the launch of the"Free Edison Campaign" by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU).

Edison Hlatshwayo was arrested on 27 September and has been in custody to date. He is being charged

with malicious injury to property following disturbances that rocked the university early September.

He is expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in Bulawayo, a local magistrate has dropped charges against 15 students who were arrested in November last year. They were being charged under the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) the 15 were on remand out of custody. The 15 are: Sifando Dube, Gibson Nyashanu, Martin Moyo, James Chihova, Reuben Moyo, Jonathan Magabathela, Shingirai Ruraka,Wonder Chamanyo, Samson Nxumalo, Variariceo Jaji, Henry Baye, Rodin Chikonzo, Nokubaya Ngwenya, Mondni Sobani and Zanele.

In Gweru officers from the CID law and order section briefly arrested the coordinator of the Students Solidarity Trust (SST), Macdonald Lewanika together with Jabusile Shumba (CHRA), Dehwa Mavhinga, Moreblessing Mudzingwa, Franscisca Midzi and Tendai Chabvuta (NGO Human Rights Forum).The group were conducting a "Human Rights Reporting and Monitoring Workshop" at Fairmile Motel in Gweru.The police failed to place any charges on the six.
