Solidarity
with S African students' revolt against tuition and accommodation
fees hikes
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
October 12, 2007
The Zimbabwe National
Students Union stamps out with the contempt it deserves, the attempts
by the South African Government to hike tuition and accommodation
fees beyond the reach of the students' populace. Mass students'
protests erupted at the University of Witwatersrand and University
of Johannesburg over the past two weeks. On Monday 8 and Tuesday
9 October 2007, police arrested 40 students and shot rubber bullets
to thwart and disperse the gatherings.
University of Witwatersrand
Student Representative Council President Themba Masondo vowed that
the protests will continue and further mobilize other students from
all universities to join in until there are concrete reforms and
repeal to the proposed fees increases. The South African Students
Congress President David Maimela blamed the Ministry of Education
for neglecting students. Maimela reminded the South African Government
not to undermine the capacity and role of students in the country.
ZINASU urges all students
in South Africa to remain resolute on principles of the right to
education, thus accessible and affordable education delivery system.
"Education is the
most powerful weapon in the fight for development" -
Nelson Mandela
