Student leader denied bail again
Students Solidarity Trust
October 11, 2007

For the record three times a Masvingo magistrate has refused bail to the jailed Great Zimbabwe university student representative council (SRC) secretary General Edison Hlatswayo.

In refusing bail, the state requested that they want to travel to Harare to verify some facts before granting him bail. Hlatshwayo was arrested on 27 September and to date he is in custody at Mutimurefu prison in Masvingo.

He has appeared in court more than three times. He is being charged with malicious injury to property after the disturbances that rocked Great Zimbabwe University early September. He was tortured in police custody allegedly by one assistant Inspector Mutandiri Muchinjike of Masvingo central police station law and order section. His health is deteriorating. He will appear in court on Monday 15 October.

Meanwhile Bulawayo police has released Themba Maphenduka a National University of Science and Technology (NUST) student activist from police custody. He was arrested on Tuesday after addressing a general meeting at the university. The state failed to place any charges against him.

The abuse of student leaders has continued unabated in the past weeks.
