Masvingo

Edison Hlatshwayo, the Secretary General of the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has once again been remanded in custody to the 11th of October where his bail application will be heard. He is facing charges of Malicious Injury to Property.

George Makamure, Hlatshwayo's co-accused was granted Z$5 million bail, and their trial which commenced today, has been postponed to the 23rd of October.

The Magistrates Court in Masvingo is refusing Edison bail on grounds that he once ran away from the police.

The charges arose after Hlatshwayo, in the company of other student leaders from the Great Zimbabwe University were assaulted by campus security as they addressed students outside the campus. Police moved in to arrest the student leaders, and accused them of assaulting campus security.

In a related story, the Magistrates Court in Masvingo has ruled that 8 student leaders who are facing charges of public violence under section 37 of the Criminal Code Act will be tried on a future date. The charges were preferred against the students after they were involved in skirmishes with students from the government support Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU).

The 8 are Mukudzei Shoko, Whitlow Mugwiji, Edison Hlatshwayo, Thomas Chanakira, Desmond Ncube, Courage Ngwarai, George Makamure and Oglyv Makova.

The state will proceed by way of summons, and the case awaits service of fresh summons for the students for a trial on a future date when the state puts its house in order. The state was not prepared to proceed with the trial.

Bulawayo

Meanwhile, Themba Maphenduka, the NUST student activist who was arrested yesterday after addressing students at the University is in police custody - his bail application hearing is set for tomorrow.

However, the state intends to oppose the bail application on the grounds they are still looking for others suspects, Langalihle Manyani and Cynthia Manjoro. Another student, Valencia Jachi, who evaded police arrest yesterday, is on the police wanted list in Bulawayo.

Mutare

Four students at Mary Mount Teachers College in Mutare were detained on Monday the 8th of October for allegedly planning a demonstration over deteriorating conditions at the campus. The four were picked up at campus around 8am and released at 5pm.

The four, Portia Mandiyanike, the Information and Publicity Officer, Ellist Tirimboyi, Mirirayi Maponde and Isheanesu Makamure were picked up by details from the Criminal Investigations Department and handed over to the dreaded spies, Central Intelligence Operatives who interrogated them, and threatened them with suspension if they continue with their protests. The Principal of the College has allegedly told the students they will not seat for exams which are starting in a week's time

And at Mutare Polytechnic, the College's student leaders, Brilliant Dube (SRC President), Micheal Nyanyiwa (SRC Secretary General) and Antonio Jones (SRC Treasurer). The lecturer, Mr. Kasingarirwe is claiming that the students did not submit the assignments.

If the assignments are not recovered the students will automatically be deferred by HEXCO. This is believed to be a deliberate and systematic attempt by the administration to victimize the students and frustrate them into not completing their courses.
