ZINWA
cuts water supplies at UZ
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
October 09, 2007
The Zimbabwe
National Water Authority(ZINWA) has reportedly cut water supplies
at the University
of Zimbabwe (UZ) following the failure by the University to
pay its bills. The university's failure to pay the water bills comes
at a time when there was already serious pressure on the sanitary
facilities. About 12 000 students were using the few toilets that
are at the lecture rooms area because most of the toilets (which
are found in the halls of residence) fall under the designated no
go area. This has resulted in students defacating and relieving
themselves outside lecture rooms, thus posing serious health hazards
to the Universty community.
With the UZ authorities continuing to put a deaf ear on the accommodation
situation at UZ, there has been a terrible outcry from female students
who are feeling the pinch more than their male counterparts with
reports coming that there has been terrible reports of sexual abuses
on the female students some of them have been left exposed to unscrupulous
businessmen who manipulate them.
The University closed down all the halls of residence on 9 July
2007 following a wave of student protests over continued fee hikes.
When the University opened its doors for the new academic year in
September 2007, the halls of residence were not re-open. The decision
not to re-open the campus hostels was premised on the 'directive'
from the Harare Municipality Health Department which allegedly declared
that the student rooms are unfit for human habitation, contrary
to the earlier grounds.
