The strike by teachers
ended last Thursday after the Zimbabwe Teachers' Association
(ZIMTA) settled with the government for a minimum monthly salary
of $14 million.
However, the increment
which translates to 400% salary rise falls below the Poverty Datum
Line currently standing at $16.7 million.
Raymond Majongwe,
the secretary general of the Progressive
Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) which led the job action
confirmed the new salaries for the teachers.
Majongwe said the teachers
are not happy and continue to dissociate themselves from the agreement
that the government made with ZIMTA which is largely a pro-government
union.
Meanwhile lecturers
from the National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) kicked out their
union leaders for being lenient on the government over a pay dispute.
The University Educators
and Teachers Association at the institution have since passed a
vote of no confidence on their union leadership which has been negotiating
for a minimum salary of $35 million which the lecturers refused
to accept.
They have since given
a notice to go on strike if their demands for salary and living
conditions are not addressed by the authorities.
