Masvingo
ZANU (PF) youths
yesterday disrupted a public meeting organised by the Youth Forum
in Masvingo. Hodes of Zanu (PF) youths invaded Charles Austin theatre
hall at around 1600 hours when the Vice President of the Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU), Gidion Chitanga was delivering
his address. These youths who are members of the Zimbabwe Congress
of Students Union (ZICOSU), a govement sponsored students body started
hauling abuse and insults to Chitanga before ordering everyone out
of the hall. The police responded by arresting 11 youths who were
attending the meeting including Madoch Chivasa the NCA spokesperson
who was also one of the speakers, Edson Hlatshayo who is the Great
Zimbabwe University S.E.C Secretary general and Wellington Zindove,
the programmes coordinator of Youth Forum, who are the organisers
of the public meeting. The 11 arrested were detained at Masvingo
Central police station yesterday over night. Early this morning
8 of them were relesed without any charges and the three who are
remaining include Chivasa, Hlatshayo and Zindove. Chivasa is being
charged for undermining police authority while Hlatshayo is being
held on allegations that he assulted college guards two weeks ago.
Wellington Zindove is being charged on allegations that he organised
a platform to attack the govenment as the organisers of the public
meeting. Masvingo police cleared this meeting under the provisions
of POSA but
we are surprised by their behaviour of arresting peaceful and innocent
citizens who are exercising their constitutional rights as enshrined
in the Zimbabwean constitution under the bill of rights.
