Accommodation
blues at UZ worsens
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 17, 2007
The accommodation
crisis at the University
of Zimbabwe has reached desperate levels. Students are sleeping
in the passengers sheds at National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and
in the night clubs in Harare. In a snap survey carried out by ZINASU,
it was noted that most female students are sleeping at NRZ while
the male students are putting up at Tipperary Night Club in the
Avenues. The University of Zimbabwe closed all the halls of residence
at the main campus on the 9th of July 2007 after a spate of peaceful
demostrations over the unjustified continued fee increase. The students
filed an urgent High Court application opposing the decision and
won their case. But Professor Levy Nyagura, the Vice Chancellor
at the biggest and oldest University in Zimbabwe defied the High
Court order . The order was granted by Justice Ben Hlatswayo on
the 13th of July 2007.
