Zimbabwean government: A negation of its own fundamental standing
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 29, 2007

The government has literally become a negation of its own fundamental standing. How can a government that came from the premise of liberating its people treat its own children worse than the racist fascist regime of lan Smith?

Robert Mugabe and his surrogates in government learnt for free and in very comfortable conditions during colonial era. Unfortunately, they have decided that the same benefits that acrued to them, shall not be for the generation currently in colleges simply because the ZANU PF Regime views students as enemies.

The extension of the semester and the subsequent attempt to have the students shoulder the costs of ZANU PF`s gross incompetence and insensetivity was foreseeable. On several times, we warned that the government should address the plight of lecturers in order to avert strikes but as usual the regime could not budge in its obstinate folly.

We at condenm the idiocy which ZANU PF has exhibited and lay the blame squarely on Robert Mugabe who is both the chancellor of all State Universities and Head of Government. This is the highest level of failure, evident enough that the time is ripe for him to step down and pave way for new ideas on how the problems affecting our country can be resolved.

The Harare regime no longer has any clue on how to take the country forward. This is a post liberation era. Honestly, the liberation movement`s ideas have been exhausted and their relevence has diminished as the world order evolved from ideological rhetoric to a more people issue based sound policies.

lt is sad to note the failure of our liberation movements in transforming the standards of people`s lives. While clothed in empty Pan African rhetoric, it has not brought any meaningful improvement to people`s lives. l wonder how Mugabe would feel when people assert that the fascist rule of lan Smith was better that his imagined Pan African dogma which has seen Zimbabwe`s economy sink further and further while Zimbabwe has become increasingly isolated.

The assauly on students and student leaders is obviously also our main worry. The regime has mounted a vicious attack on its imagined enemies and the students movement has not been spared. My relatives were attacked a few weeks ago accused of habouring me.The students leaders at Masvingo State University, Witlow Mugwiji and Edson Hlatshwayo, President and Secretary General respectively, were heavily assaulted in front of their collegues in an examination room. The two are recovering from hospital. Kudakwashe Muteri and Siza Edwart from the University of Zimbabwe were heavily assaulted and are also recovering from hospital. Beloved Chiweshe, the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe National Students Union and Munjodzi Mutandiri (Former President of Chinhoyi University of Technology , CUT) were recently abducted, tortured and found fighting for their dear lives in the bushes a few kilometres outside Harare.A whole lot of other student leaders are hiding from this vicious monster in the form of Robert Mugabe and ZANU PF.

Recently, MDC activists were found dead in Matobo. The reasons for all these barbaric acts are simple. ZANU PF is panicking. The people have overwhelmed them and have overcome fear. They are ready to face the dwindling regime head on. Force perpetrated by the Mugabe regime has not achieved its intended goal. The economy has not been intimidated by the heinous force used to neutralise political opponents. It has remained turbulent. Mugabe has no idea on how to solve economic problems. He wants to flee the country, but his young wife still wants to enjoy power(which he assumed through dubious means). Mugabe`s oligarchy is discouraging him for selfish reasons.

The students are the fontrunners in the campaign to bring down ZANU PF. Because of their high level of consciousness, the students have never been known to allow idiocy to rampage with impunity. Therefore, ZANU PF is trying to silence them. Unfortunately, they have failed. The union is more robust and vigilinat than ever before. The students are baying for the blood of those who denied them a descent life and of course, the regime is running out of ideas.

The SADC talks headed by Thabo Mbeki who seems unwilling to cede power at the African Natonal Congress in December. He is also failing to alleviate the workers plight in his own country. Mbeki should not dupe the pro-democratic movements of Zimbabwe into abandoning the most viable root to their emancipation, that is through mass actions and street struggles.

The on going African Union meeting must be told in no uncertain terms that gone are the days when dictaors could be allowed to maim and persecute their own people in the name of African liberation and national interests. No matter how patriotic one can claim to be , there are certain non-negotiable concepts like human rights simply by virtue of one being human. The African Union must show that it is not a toothless bulldog(brutum fulmen) by moving in quickly to protect people from human rights abuse and smart genocide.

Mugabe has stayed for much too long in office to the extent that he has outlived his usefulness. He can neither offer any fresh ideas nor motivate the people to work towards economic recovery, social cohesion and political stability. He must simply leave office. Even some elements within ZANU PF agree with me on this one.

The focus therefore, must not be narrow and parochial. It must be broadened to pay attention to the causes of the student problems and focus on trying to deal with them, then the rest will follow. The people are having an upper hand and must continue to bolster their revolutionary tide in order to be able to influence the mediation talks in a more people oriented and progressive way.

Otherwise the people have finally reached their victory. They just need to hold on for a while.
