Student leaders barred from writing exams
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 18, 2007

Masvingo

Masvingo State University (MASU) Students Union President, Whitlaw Mugwiji and Secretary General, Edson Hlatswayo were last week barred from writing examinations. The two are currently on a pending verdict from a hearing that was sat on 21 May 2007. This comes after Whitlaw and Edson mobilised students to defy the illegal TOP UP FEES that were demanded by the university administration. In rejoinder, the university administration closed doors to the dinning halls, but this did not intimidate students who then went on to serve themselves with the already prepared meals at the dining halls. This led to the arrest and charge of the two student leaders. However, frantic efforts are being made in consultation with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, to draft a High Court order to grant them siting for examinations.

Meanwhile . . .

Students at Hillside Teacher and Bulawayo Polytechnic College have declared an indefinite class boycott, citing the ever increasing cost of learning and living at colleges. Students on Teaching Practice are getting a stipend of ZW$66,000-00 (sixty-six thousand zimbabwean dollars) whose value is equivalent to three 300 ml coke bottles.
