Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 14, 2007
Four truck loads
of armed riot police today disrupted a legal General Meeting for
students at Bulawayo Polytechnic College. Students had gathered
on campus at a place popularily known as the Hunger Square to address
the prevailing issue of fees top ups.
Students are being forced
with immediate effect to pay a hefty ZW$750,000-00 otherwise face
eviction from the halls of residence and denial to examinations.
A similar predicament
has been reported to have hit Masvingo Polytechnic College, were
students are being threatened with harsh and immediate eviction
from college facilities.
Addressing at the Bulawayo
Polytechnic College were Vava Blessing, former President, Clever
Bere, National University of Science and Technology Students Union
President, his Vice Mehluli Dube, Themba Mapenduka and Pritchard
Bhebhe, Students Union President for Hillside Teachers College.
Other issues topical
on the agenda were the recent move by the government of Robert Mugabe
to bond students, the on going lecturers strikes, torture and victimisation
of students. Student raised a burning concern over the government
failure to provide consistent power supply to the people of Zimbabwe.
This has heavily affected
the learning process, particularily students at Engineering and
the Hotel school who are failing to have practicals. The former
president, Blessed Vava declared a class boycott that shall feed
into the national protest.
No reports have been received so far of any arrests.
