ZINASU
mourns Professor Walter Kamba
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 22, 2007
The Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU) expresses its heartfelt condolences
to the Kamba family and the nation at large following the death
of the first black Vice-Chancellor of the University
of Zimbabwe, Professor Walter Kamba. Professor Kamba who was
75, died on Sunday 20th of May 2007 at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
On behalf of all students in Zimbabwe's tertiary institutions, ZINASU
mourns the veteran educationist. Professor Kamba played a pivotal
role in rejecting Ordinance 30 and resisting external influence
and indulgence to his day to day duties when he was at the helm
of the University of Zimbabwe. In 1990 when the Government of Zimbabwe
through the parliament rushed the University of Zimbabwe Amendment
Bill which saw the birth of the Higher Education Council, Professor
Kamba the then Vice-Chancellor resigned citing political interference
in the running of the University. He publicly opposed the University
of Zimbabwe Amendment Bill saying he did not want the powers it
would give him to suspend students and dissolve the Students' Representative
Council (SRC).
He was an illustrious leader who had the interests of students at
heart. Professor Kamba sacrificed his job for the love of students'
welfare. Professor Kamba was selfless and patriotic in the way he
executed his duties. This was shown by his contribution at the Lancaster
House Constitutional Conference by providing legal advice to the
Patriotic Front as well as serving as a Commissioner in the Constitutional
Commission of 1999. Despite his rare legal brains, Professor Kamba
carried himself with humility befitting the least educated and lowest
member of the society.
Professor Kamba leaves a legacy of unparalleled academic excellence
and fatherly concern for the welfare of students: a far cry from
the political stooges which pollute our education system currently.
His professionalism is legendary. He epitomises the height at which
the education system in Zimbabwe soared before it plunged into this
all time low due to mismanagement and political posturing and bootlicking.
We, as ZINASU shall remain resolutely inspired by the stature, spirit,
will and unwavering professionalism of our late professor. The legacy
for academic freedom lives on.
"My conscience is my master" Professor Walter Kamba
